Thank you for considering a fundraising event for Action Kidney Cancer
As a patient-led charity who receives no government funding we value the good will and generosity of our fundraisers. Your fundraising contributions make a big difference to the work that we do to support families affected by kidney cancer. The funds we raise are extremely valuable to us, and enable us to provide our vital support services, such as our helpline, patient support forum and research. Your fundraising donations can make a big difference to people affected by kidney cancer by ensuring they get the support and information they need throughout their kidney cancer journey.
By organising or taking part in a fundraising event for us, you can help to support kidney cancer patients and their families while having fun at the same time. Fundraising events can be small, like a coffee morning with friends, or on a larger scale, such as a black-tie ball. They can be active, such as a sponsored walk, run, cycle or skydive, or social, such as a quiz night, pampering evening or party. Every pound raised makes a difference to the lives of people affected by kidney cancer.

Setting up a fundraising page
Once you have decided on your fundraising event, you might want to set up your fundraising page on one of the fundraising platforms, such as Enthuse. You can then share this page with family and friends to support your fundraising activity. Click on the ‘Fundraise’ button in the box on the right to go to the Action Kidney Cancer fundraising page on Enthuse, click on the ‘Fundraise for us’ button in the top right and follow the instructions.
The Fundraising Regulator has issued some standards for organising a fundraising event. If you decide to organise a fundraising event for Action Kidney Cancer, please take a look at these standards before you start. The standards cover planning and carrying out events (including challenge events) in the UK or overseas, including any permission that might be needed to use a site, making sure the event is safe, and managing the risks responsibly.

Forthcoming events
If you organised your own fundraising event, returning money couldn’t be simpler. If you have raised your money via an online fundraising website like Just Giving, Enthuse or Total Giving, this will come directly to Action Kidney Cancer. You don’t need to worry about Gift Aid either.
To pay money in, please make a one-off donation using our donate form, which can be found on our Donate page here or by clicking on our Donate to Action Kidney Cancer form here. Follow the instructions on our donate form to make your donation. Or you can send a cheque to Action Kidney Cancer, 11th Floor, 3 Piccadilly Place, Manchester M1 3BN.
If you are a UK tax payer and you make your donation from your own funds, you can register for Gift Aid to enable us to claim extra money from HMRC. We can claim an extra 25p for every £1 you donate. This means Gift Aid can increase the value of your donations by 25%, so you can give even more to to help us support kidney cancer patients. You can find a Gift Aid form in our fundraising pack or you can download one here.

John Walton Memorial Concert
John’s wife, Siew, organised a memorial concert on 23rd March at St Michael’s Church in Chiswick in honour of the memory of John and to celebrate his life. John inspired many of us with his courage in overcoming adversity in his fight against cancer. John loved to play and listen to music and the choice of music selected for the concert reflects this. On the night the community came together to remember John and had a joyful evening of singing along to the live music and dancing in the aisles of the beautiful venue. Jack’s skydive
On 20th February 2023 Hopkin (Hoppy) Thomas sadly lost his battle with kidney cancer. On 29th September 2023, his son Jack Albie Thomas did a Skydive at 15,000 ft in the memory of his father. In doing so, Jack has so far raised £2,400.00 in support of Action Kidney Cancer. Huge thanks to Jack and everyone who supported him for his skydive. All the money raised will help support people and their families affected by this devastating disease get the treatment and care they need to beat it. Sax on the Green
On 5th August, Martin hosted a “Sax on the Green” event for the residents of the private estate where he lives. The event took place on the communal green and around 70 residents brought chairs and tables to enjoy an afternoon of Martin playing the saxophone for a couple of hours, all in aid of Action Kidney Cancer. There were BBQ sausages, cake and a raffle to raise funds. Mostly the sun shone – at one point the heavens opened, but people sheltered under gazebos and umbrellas and eventually the sun returned. It was a thoroughly enjoyable event and we would like to thank Martin and his neighbours for raising a grand total of £528 for Action Kidney Cancer.
Northern Soul Charity All Dayer
The third Northern Soul charity event took place on Sunday 13 August at The Crozzy Club in Crewe. This huge event involved around 20 DJs from all over the country, donating their time and love for music for a great cause. This year’s event raised a whopping £3,000 – huge thanks to the Pointon family for organising another fantastic event!
We would also like to thank The Crozzy Club and all the DJs for providing the venue and the music to make this event a great success.
Preparations for next year’s Northern Soul charity event are already underway and the date has been set for 11 August 2024; a date for the diary!
Northern Soul Weekender
The second Northern Soul event took place over the weekend of the 13 and 14 August. This was the first time the event has been run over two days, and it was a great success. A massive thank you to Dave, Shirley and Steve Pointon, who organised the event to raise funds for Action Kidney Cancer. Everyone had a great time, danced the weekend away, enjoyed great music and raised £2,540 in the process.
We would also like to thank Nantwich Town Football Club who provided the venue.
The date for next year’s Northern Soul Weekender has already been set for 12 and 13 August 2023; a date for the diary!
Andy’s 2.6 Challenge
Andy Thomas, chair of the trustees for the Kidney Cancer Support Network, took part in the national virtual 2.6 Challenge, which took the place of the London Marathon during the COVID-19 pandemic. Andy’s personal challenge was to cycle at least 26 miles a day for 26 days starting on the 26th April.
Andy completed his epic challenge and raised a whopping £1,100 in the process. Huge thanks to Andy for this tremendous effort!
Northern Soul Day
A massive thank you to Dave and Shirley Pointon, parents of Steve Pointon a member of our community, who recently organised a Northern Soul Day to raise funds for us. The day was a fantastic success, everyone had a great time, danced, enjoyed great music and raised £2,633 in the process.
We would also like to thank Dave Cooke, Nantwich Town Football Club Manager, and Johnny Briggs and Clive Read from Crewe Soul Club, who provided use of their DJ equipment and were two of the ten DJ’s on the day who gave their time and music for free. Janet’s Lockdown Run for Life
Janet used her daily exercise run to raise funds for KCSN because of their support for her and her partner and everyone affected by kidney cancer. Normally Janet would be taking part in the Cancer Research Race for Life and running along the seafront with 100’s of others. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 this event was cancelled she decided to run as part of her daily exercise, which has been so important during lockdown.
BIG THANKS to Janet for raising a huge £630 for kidney cancer patients during these unprecedented times.
Ernie and Stanley’s 2.6 Challenge
Ernie and Stanley’s daddy, Steve, has had kidney cancer twice. The Kidney Cancer Support Network has helped him a lot through his illness and since. Steve now helps KCSN and other patients as much as he can. The COVID-19 pandemic is a tough time for the charity as all fundraising has had to stop. Ernie and Stanley made 26 cakes for the national virtual 2.6 Challenge, which took the place of the London Marathon during the COVID-19 pandemic.
BIG THANKS to Ernie and Stanley who raised £180 for the KCSN! Needless to say, the cakes didn’t last long!
Cork Iron Man
Huge thanks to Andy Pointon for completing a massive achievement for Action Kidney Cancer and Macmillan Cancer Support on 16 June, World Kidney Cancer Day. The event included a 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike ride and a marathon run. After months of hard training, Andy completed the course to support people with kidney cancer, like his brother, Steve.
The donations were split between Action Kidney Cancer, the largest and most active patient-led kidney cancer charity, and Macmillan, who do such amazing work providing information and support to those who really need it.
Andy raised an amazing £1,050 for Action Kidney Cancer, which will go towards supporting others like his brother Steve and their families. A big thank you from all of us!
Sharon’s 2.6 Challenge
Sharon Kell took part in the national virtual 2.6 Challenge, which took the place of the London Marathon during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sharon’s personal challenge was to hold the plank for 2.6 minutes every day for 26 days starting on the 26th April, the day the London Marathon was to be held.
Sharon raised just over £200 for the KCSN, but it didn’t seem to make a great deal of difference to her stomach! Thank you Sharon!
Maggie Dix’s Italian Pilgrimage
Maggie, Chris, Sue and Dave walked 104 km along the Way of Saint Benedict from Rieti to Rome, Italy over 6 days during September 2019 to raise awareness of kidney cancer. KCSN have been a tremendous support to Maggie and Chris’ daughter Charlotte and her husband, Andrew, who has been fighting kidney cancer for the last 9 years. He was first diagnosed just a few weeks before his 22nd birthday.
We are very grateful to Maggie and her friends who raised just over £2,000 to help KCSN support and improve the lives of kidney cancer patients throughout the UK.
The Chiltern Challenge hike
Rachel Ann Bailey and her friends completed the Chiltern Challenge hike to raise funds for KCSN. The friends walked 50 km through some of the Chilterns finest countryside, with historic trails, rolling hills, nature reserves, and fantastic views and raised a whopping £3,079 which was donated to KCSN to help support kidney cancer patients and their families throughout the UK. Huge thanks to Rachel and her friends for such a massive achievement.
Steve Pointon: 40 for 40
A very big THANK YOU to Steve Pointon who decided to get fit for his 40th birthday and raise funds for KCSN in the process. Steven has been diagnosed with kidney cancer twice since 2016 and beaten it on both occasions. He is currently in long-term remission. Last year, Steven turned 40 and decided to undertake a charity challenge that is way out of his comfort zone. He needed to lose weight and get healthier to take advantage of the second chance of life and did this by undertaking 40 days of consecutive exercise leading up to the day before his 40th birthday.
Steve raised a massive £2,520 of which he donated 50% to The Christie Hospital in Manchester where he was treated, and 50% to KCSN.
Beth Thomas: The Lavender Ball
A huge thank you to Beth Thomas for organising another fundraising ball on the Isle of Man in aid of the Kidney Cancer Support Network and a local hospice. The KCSN received a massive sum of £4,570, which we are truly grateful for.
We are indebted to Beth who has held a number of fundraising events for our charity. Each event takes an enormous amount of planning and all have been hugely successful, which is testament to the immense amount of work she puts in. Thank you Beth for your strong support of our charity.

Steve’s London Summer Walk Challenge
Steve Goldsmith and his wife, Jan, walked 13 miles to support the invaluable work of the Kidney Cancer Support Network. They had lovely weather for the event, and completed their walk through London in just over 5 hours with a refreshment break halfway: a fantastic achievement! The route started and finished at the Oval Cricket Ground on Saturday 5 June, and took in highlights of the Thames and its historic bridges, and many of the Capital’s key landmarks. An active and fun day out in the City!

Mark Ralston: Redcentric Bed Race
A huge THANK YOU to the Redcentric team who raised a whopping £1,915 for KCSN in the Great Knaresborough Bed Race in June. The Bed Race is part fancy dress pageant, and part gruelling time trial over a 2.4 mile course, ending with a swim through the icy waters of the River Nidd!
Redcentric man Mark Ralston was diagnosed with stage 4 renal cell carcinoma in July 2017 at the age of just 38. As a direct result of time spent with KCSN, Mark was the first person in the UK to be accepted onto the PRISM trial for combination immunotherapy, and he has responded extremely well.

Hollie Bailey: Tea and Cake Afternoon
A very big THANK YOU to wonderful Hollie Bailey, aged just 8 years old. Hollie’s dad has kidney cancer and Hollie wanted to do something to help. With the support of her mum, Rachel, Hollie decided to host a Tea and Cake Afternoon in her home town of Thame, Oxfordshire, to raise funds for KCSN. Everyone at KCSN wanted to say a HUGE thank you to Hollie – what a star! Hollie far exceeded her target of £200 and has so far raised over £1100! Here you can see a selection of the fabulous cakes that were on sale, complete with green ribbons for kidney cancer!
Stephen Bailey: Bloodwise Blenheim Palace Triathlon
Along with three friends, Stephen Bailey took part in the Bloodwise Blenheim Palace Triathlon and raised a huge £2,420 for KCSN.
The team completed the Super Sprint Triathlon, swimming 400m, riding a bike for 13.2km and running 2.9km.
This is such a huge achievement, Stephen having been diagnosed with kidney cancer in September 2017, with metastases in his adrenal gland, pelvis, lung, spine and nasal area. For Stephen, keeping active and fit is a huge part of tackling the side effects of treatment.

Debbie Murphy: Stratford Upon Avon Marathon
A massive THANK YOU to an inspirational woman, Debbie Murphy, who ran her first full marathon yesterday in Stratford-upon-Avon, almost 5 years to the day since she had her nephrectomy after being diagnosed with kidney cancer. This is a remarkable achievement by a very wonderful woman. Debbie is raising money for our own Kidney Cancer Support Network and Facing up 2 Kidney Cancer, both founded and run by kidney cancer patients. She exceeded her target of £1,000 and raised over £1,500. Thank you Debbie – we are so grateful for your support.
