Following suspensions by some countries of the COVID-19 Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine over suspected blood clots, the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority (MHRA) in the UK confirms that the benefits of the vaccine in preventing COVID-19 far outweigh the risks. People should still go and get their COVID-19 vaccine when asked to do so.

However, the MHRA has changed their advice in the last few hours to restrict the use of the Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to people aged over 30 because of the risk of a rare blood clot syndrome. But other European countries and Canada have broader restrictions, with higher age cut-offs. Why are the regulations different, and what are the implications for vaccine roll-out in the UK?
