The Yorkshire Kidney Screening Trial is the first study to test screening for kidney cancer. People who are have screening for lung cancer are offered an additional CT scan of their tummy (abdomen). The researchers report the number of kidney cancers detected with lung cancer screening. This has implications for future health service planning and future screening studies.
The study showed that the current lung cancer screening programme for people who are at high risk of getting lung and kidney cancer will detect 2.6 cases of kidney cancer for every 1000 people screened using a chest CT scan. Adding an abdominal CT scan will detect an additional 2.5 cases of kidney cancer for every 1000 people screened. These figures will help in the planning of health care resources and future cancer screening studies.
