A new approach to diagnosing kidney cancer, called the Cambridge kidney One-Stop Mass Investigation Clinic (CkOSMIC), was trialled at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

Traditionally, diagnosing kidney cancer can take weeks and involves several hospital visits. However, CkOSMIC allows patients to have their kidney biopsied, get their test results, and discuss treatment options all on the same day. This is possible thanks to a special microscope that quickly scans the biopsy sample, letting doctors review it immediately and give a provisional diagnosis within minutes.

In 2024, 50 patients took part in this new clinic. Almost all received a same-day diagnosis, and the test results were highly accurate. The time from biopsy to treatment decision was halved, and patients were very happy with the quicker process and faster communication of results. Importantly, there were no safety concerns.

This new method shows it’s possible to provide fast, accurate, and safe kidney cancer diagnosis in just one hospital visit, which could be used for other cancers and in other countries too.
