A recent study published in Cancers this month provides evidence of the safety and effectiveness of image-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for the treatment of small renal cancers.

One hundred and forty-nine (149) patients with an average age of 67 years had radiofrequency ablation for the treatment of a small renal cancer and were followed for 54 months afterwards. There was a low rate of multiple treatments with radiofrequency ablation (18.1%) and only 13 patients (8.7%) experienced complications due to the procedure. Twenty four (24) patients died during the follow-up period, all as a result of causes unrelated to renal cancer.

In conclusion, image-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation is safe and effective for the treatment of small renal cancers in the long-term, with a low rate of multiple treatments over the course of the disease.
