A person who guides a patient through the confusing maze of health care with caring and sensitivity. A patient advocate focuses exclusively on the patient’s needs, and helps the patient resolve concerns about the quality of their care, get the care the patient needs, and ensures the patient’s voice is heard and that they are included in decision-making. Patient advocacy groups try to raise public awareness about important cancer issues, such as the need for cancer support services, education, and research. Such groups work to bring about change that will help cancer patients and their families.
