A monoclonal antibody used in the treatment of colorectal cancer and kidney cancer that has spread. It works by preventing the growth of new blood vessels into a solid tumour, thereby starving the tumour of nutrients and oxygen needed for growth. Bevacizumab is a type of angiogenesis inhibitor. Bevacizumab is the chemical (or generic) name of the drug, while Avastin is the brand (or trade) name under which the drug is licensed and sold.
